A 34-year old Nigerian from Ondo State, Ayebusiwa Olabode Victor, has reportedly been killed while fighting alongside Russian forces in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
According to reports released by Ukraine Defence Intelligence, Victor died during combat operations in the Kharkiv region after allegedly joining the Russian military through a contract arrangement earlier this year.
The deceased, said to be from Ilutitun in Ondo State, reportedly travelled abroad in search of better opportunities before becoming involved in the conflict.
The development has sparked fresh concerns over the growing number of young Nigerians allegedly being recruited into foreign conflicts under the promise of employment and financial rewards.
Observers say the tragic incident highlights the harsh realities facing many youths seeking greener pastures outside the country amid economic hardship and unemployment.
Victor’s death is coming months after reports emerged that other Nigerians had also lost their lives while fighting on the Russian side of the war.
