President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has transmitted five key executive communications to the Senate for legislative consideration and approval.
The broad legislative package encompasses bills seeking to repeal and re-enact the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Act to strengthen anti-narcotics investigations, as well as an amendment to the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) Act to expand its investigative mandate into the maritime sector.
President Tinubu also requested the repeal of the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON) Act to establish the National School of Government as a modern public administrative training hub.
Additionally, the executive submission includes a formal request to reimburse the Yobe State Government ₦100.5 billion following the federal takeover of the Damaturu Cargo Airport.
To reinforce Nigeria’s human rights and international justice legal framework, the President sought approval for the domestication of additional protocols to the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, aimed at empowering domestic courts to enforce punishment for genocide and related offences.
During the same plenary session, the Senate observed a minute of silence to honour the victims of the recent Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft crash near Igbokoda, Ondo State.
Expressing deep condolences to the bereaved families and the military leadership, the upper legislative chamber called for a transparent investigation, a full audit of military aircraft fleets, and a probe into maintenance funding to avert future tragedies.
