The inaugural Hon. Johnson Ogunbolude Unity Cup is set for a grand finale on Saturday, October 3, 2026 as top grassroots teams clash for ultimate glory at the St. Francis Secondary School pitch in Igoba, Akure North. Organised by the Akure North Football Council to foster grassroots talent, social cohesion, and youth empowerment across the Local Government Area, the tournament has delivered weeks of high-octane football action and intense community rivalry.
The competition kicked off in late June 2026 under the vision of Akure North Executive Chairman, Hon. Johnson Ogunbolude, who aimed to use sports to promote peace and foster unity among young residents.
Matches played across the group stages produced standout moments, including high-scoring encounters, tactical defensive battles, and tight three-way ties on the group tables that kept fans at the edge of their seats. Teams like Osi United FC, Dynamo FC, Emergency FC, and Eleven Wise Men FC consistently commanded attention with dominant displays on the St. Francis pitch throughout September.
The tournament reached its business end after grueling semi-final ties, where Ipole City FC overcame Emergency FC to secure a place in the showpiece event, while Eleven Wise Men FC fought past Dynamo FC to book their ticket to the final.
Action begins with the Third Place match between Dynamo FC and Emergency FC, as both sides look to end their impressive campaigns on a high note and claim the bronze medal position. The marquee spectacle will follow as Ipole City FC square off against Eleven Wise Men FC in the Final to determine who will be crowned the champions of the maiden Hon. Johnson Ogunbolude Unity Cup.
Football enthusiasts, community leaders, and residents from across Akure North are expected to fill the venue to celebrate the culmination of the historic tournament.
