The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), has debunked reports making the rounds regarding the alleged release of subvention arrears by the Ondo State Government.
The Union Chairman, Comrade Ekundayo C.A., made the clarification in a statement issued to members, describing reports circulating on social media as misleading and an attempt by the state government to cover up its administrative shortfalls.
Setting the record straight on the financial details, the union chairman noted that the university’s monthly budgetary allocation for 2026 stands at N333 million. However, between January and August 2026, the state government released only N223 million monthly, resulting in an unpaid monthly balance of N110 million.
Following sustained agitations by campus unions, the government had promised a 60 percent increase on the original N333 million monthly allocation. Contrary to widespread claims of paying off accrued arrears, the government only disbursed N110 million, representing the outstanding balance for August 2026.
The union urged members and the general public to disregard false claims of arrears clearance, reiterating that the full arrears from January through August remain unpaid. The leadership reaffirmed its resolve to sustain the ongoing industrial action until all demands are fully met.
Meanwhile, the Ondo State Government announced that it has effected payment for the August arrears balance of the new subventions across state-owned tertiary institutions.
In a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, the government stated that the disbursement marks the commencement of the 60 percent subvention increment intended to improve worker welfare and meet salary obligations.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa appealed to the striking academic and non-academic unions to reciprocate the gesture by calling off the strike and returning to work in the interest of students and the state.
