The Lagos State Police Command has launched a massive manhunt for the killers of the Organising Secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba ‘Ijaya’, following his assassination by suspected gunmen.
Ajiboye was reportedly attacked while returning home from his community in Fadeyi. According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants intercepted his vehicle and opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene.
He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to a hospital, where he later died despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life.
The killing has sent shockwaves through the transport union and the state, with colleagues describing the late union leader as a committed administrator who played a key role in coordinating the affairs of the NURTW in Lagos.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Command said detectives have commenced a comprehensive investigation into the murder and are pursuing all available leads to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The command assured residents that every effort is being made to bring the perpetrators to justice and urged members of the public with useful information to come forward.
The leadership of the Lagos NURTW expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Ajiboye as a loyal and hardworking official whose death has left a huge vacuum within the union. Members called for a thorough investigation and swift prosecution of those behind the attack.
The assassination has heightened concerns over security and the safety of transport union officials in Lagos, with many stakeholders calling on law enforcement agencies to ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted without delay.
