Spain have secured their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Belgium 2-1 in a dramatic quarter-final encounter, thanks to another decisive goal from substitute Mikel Merino.
La Roja controlled much of the contest and took the lead through Fabián Ruiz in the first half, but Belgium responded before the break to restore parity and set up a tense second half.

Belgium’s challenge was further hampered after first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was forced off through injury, leaving his replacement unable to prevent Spain’s late winner. Spain finished as deserved victors after producing another composed and clinical display.
The victory sets up a mouth-watering semi-final showdown against France, who booked their place after defeating Morocco 2-0.
The second semi-final spot will be decided by the winners of the remaining quarter-final clashes between Norway and England, and Argentina and Switzerland, with the victorious teams meeting for a place in the World Cup final.
Spain will now aim to overcome France and move one step closer to lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy, while Belgium bow out after an impressive tournament run.
