Seven students abducted by suspected gunmen in Lassa community, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, have been rescued following a coordinated operation involving local vigilantes, the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and the Nigerian Air Force.
The students were reportedly preparing for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) when armed attackers invaded the community and whisked them away, throwing residents into panic.
Following the abduction, members of the local vigilante group and the Civilian Joint Task Force launched a swift pursuit of the fleeing gunmen, while the Nigerian Air Force deployed aircraft to provide aerial surveillance and support for the rescue mission.
Security sources said the operation forced the abductors to abandon their motorcycles and flee into nearby bushes after sighting the military aircraft overhead. The attackers reportedly escaped under pressure, leaving the seven students behind unharmed.
The rescued students were subsequently reunited with their families amid jubilation in the community, bringing relief to parents and residents who had feared for their safety.
Security agencies have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and ensure they are brought to justice.
