President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that while Nigeria’s pro-democracy heroes secured political freedom through the historic June 12 struggle, the responsibility of the present generation is to ensure economic prosperity for all citizens.
Speaking in his 2026 Democracy Day address, the President said Nigeria has sustained 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule, describing it as the longest period of democratic governance in the nation’s history.
Tinubu noted that the sacrifices of pro-democracy icons, including the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola and other activists who fought against military dictatorship, laid the foundation for Nigeria’s democratic system, which must now translate into tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.
He said democracy must go beyond elections and institutions, stressing that it must be felt in the economy, job creation, infrastructure, and the overall quality of life of Nigerians.
The President highlighted ongoing economic reforms by his administration, saying they were aimed at restoring fiscal stability, attracting investment, and boosting growth across key sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, energy, and technology.
On security, Tinubu said the government had intensified the fight against terrorism and banditry, disclosing that thousands of terrorists had been neutralised while many others and their families had surrendered in recent years.
He reaffirmed that the administration would not relent until peace is fully restored across the country.
He also announced increased investment in security, including the recruitment of thousands of personnel and a significant budgetary allocation to defence, describing national security as a prerequisite for democratic stability.
Tinubu further urged Nigerians, especially the youth, to remain committed to building the country, encouraging them to contribute to national development rather than despair or emigration.
According to him, the next phase of Nigeria’s democratic journey must focus on economic freedom, inclusive growth, and ensuring that the benefits of governance are felt at the grassroots.
The President concluded that every generation has a defining responsibility, stating that while past heroes secured democracy, the current leadership must secure prosperity for future generations.
