The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, urging Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and renew their commitment to national unity and responsible citizenship.
Announcing the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described June 12 as a historic day that honours the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose struggles paved the way for democratic governance in the country.
The Minister reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to upholding democratic principles, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance, stressing that these values would continue to guide government policies and actions.
He also assured citizens that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with security agencies, would continue to strengthen internal security measures to safeguard lives and property across the nation, noting that a peaceful and stable environment remains crucial to national development.
Calling on Nigerians to use the occasion for civic reflection, Tunji-Ojo urged citizens to remain law-abiding, support democratic institutions and promote national cohesion.
The statement, signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, emphasized that the strength of Nigeria’s democracy ultimately depends on the character and collective responsibility of its citizens.
