Three passengers have been confirmed dead and several others injured following the derailment of the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) at Agbor in Delta State.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed that the incident occurred along the busy rail corridor on Monday, with four coaches reportedly leaving the tracks in what railway authorities described as a derailment.
Emergency response teams, security agencies and other relevant authorities were immediately mobilised to the scene to rescue passengers and provide medical assistance to the injured. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) also deployed its Emergency Response Team to support ongoing rescue and evacuation operations.
In a statement issued by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, the corporation said it was closely monitoring the situation and would provide further details as investigations progress.
A subsequent statement from the Presidency confirmed that three passengers lost their lives in the accident, adding that all those aboard the train had been accounted for.
Authorities said support was being provided to survivors and families of the deceased, while investigations had commenced to determine the cause of the derailment.
The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of Nigeria’s railway infrastructure, coming weeks after the Warri–Itakpe route experienced temporary operational disruptions due to technical issues.
Members of the public have been urged to rely on verified information from the Nigerian Railway Corporation as rescue efforts and investigations continue.
