Former Nigeria Premier Football League champions Remo Stars have suffered a shocking relegation to the Nigeria National League after conceding a heartbreaking last-minute goal in their decisive final game in Benin City.
The Sky Blue Stars, who lifted the 2024/2025 NPFL title in historic fashion, completed one of the most dramatic falls in recent Nigerian football history as they dropped from league champions to second-tier football within one season.
The club enjoyed its greatest success under former head coach Daniel Ogunmodede, who guided the team to their maiden league triumph while also serving as an assistant coach of the Super Eagles.
However, a disappointing run of results during the just concluded 2025/2026 campaign led to his replacement by the club’s management towards the closing stages of the season.
Despite efforts to avoid the drop, Remo Stars’ survival hopes were crushed by Bendel Insurance late goal that ended Draw and confirmed their relegation from the top flight.
The result means the club will now compete in the NNL next season alongside their academy side.
Also relegated from the NPFL are El-Kanemi Warriors, Bayelsa United and Wikki Tourists.
