The Governance Advisory Council (GAC) has unanimously endorsed the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement was announced on Tuesday at Lagos House, Marina, by GAC leader, Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi, who spoke on behalf of the council.
Olusi disclosed that members of the GAC had not only agreed on Hamzat’s candidacy but had also collectively paid for his nomination form, signaling strong backing from the apex political advisory body in the state.
The decision, according to him, followed extensive consultations among party leaders and stakeholders, who expressed confidence in Hamzat’s leadership capacity and track record in governance.
Political leaders within the state, including the incumbent governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had earlier thrown their weight behind Hamzat, further strengthening his emergence as the preferred candidate.
This endorsement reflects traditional growing consensus within the political structure of the state, with many stakeholders citing Hamzat’s experience, competence, and continuity in governance as key factors.
The electoral community has also widely lauded Hamzat’s credentials, describing him as a seasoned administrator with the capacity and ability to deliver on the demands of leadership in Lagos State.
The GAC’s endorsement is expected to shape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, as party stakeholders continue consultations to ensure unity and a smooth primary process.
