The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will commence a nationwide voter register revalidation exercise on April 13, 2026, as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
In a letter signed by Rose Oriaran-Anthony, secretary to the commission, the exercise, which will be conducted in phases across the country, is aimed at cleaning up the voters’ register to enhance the credibility and integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.
According to details of the schedule, the revalidation will begin at the Local Government Area (LGA) level from April 13 to May 2. This will be followed by the Registration Area (RA) phase from May 5 to May 11, and subsequently at the Polling Unit (PU) level from May 13 to May 19. The exercise will then return to the LGA level for a final phase from May 20 to May 29.
INEC has directed its Resident Electoral Commissioners nationwide to make adequate preparations for the exercise, including the deployment of personnel and voter enrolment devices. The Commission has also commenced capacity-building efforts through training programmes to ensure a smooth and efficient process.
The revalidation exercise is expected to address issues such as duplicate registrations, underage voting, and inaccurate voter data, while also updating the national voters’ register.
