Ondo State Governor, Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has acknowledged the pivotal roles played by past leaders and administrators in laying the foundations for the State’s development, while outlining an ambitious vision for accelerated industrial growth and economic transformation.
The Governor made this known on Thursday at the 50th World Press Conference held at the Government House, Akure, as part of activities marking the Golden Jubilee of Ondo State.
Governor Aiyedatiwa described the 50th anniversary as a moment of deep historical and developmental significance, noting that it offers a rare opportunity to reflect on the journey of the State, appraise present realities and chart a strategic path for the future.
According to him, five decades provide sufficient perspective to evaluate the ideals that inspired the creation of Ondo State and the impact of successive administrations in advancing those ideals.
He recalled the prolonged political struggle, intellectual engagement and moral persuasion that culminated in the creation of the State, stressing that Ondo State emerged from the aspiration of its people for governance that is closer to the grassroots and capable of delivering equitable and inclusive development.
The Governor paid special tribute to the first civilian Governor of Ondo State, Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin, whom he described as a leader of exceptional integrity whose principled style of governance set enduring benchmarks for public service and accountability.
He also acknowledged the contributions of nationalist leaders and elder statesmen, including the late Chief Ayo Fasanmi, late Barrister Deji Adegoroye, Pa Reuben Fasoranti and Basorun Seinde Arogbofa, whose legacies continue to shape the State’s political and moral values.
Governor Aiyedatiwa further recognised the roles of successive military and civilian administrators, from the pioneer Military Administrator, Wing Commander David Ikpeme, and Colonel Moses Fasanya, to civilian leaders including Chief Bamidele Olumilua, Chief Adebayo Adefarati, Dr Olusegun Agagu, Dr Olusegun Mimiko and his immediate predecessor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, CON, for their contributions to the State’s growth and stability.
Highlighting Ondo State’s developmental strides over the years, the Governor cited improvements in education, healthcare, agriculture, road infrastructure, industrialisation and public sector reforms.
He noted that these achievements were recorded despite economic challenges, population pressures, environmental concerns and evolving security threats, attributing the progress to the resilience, enterprise and intellect of the people of the State.
Looking to the future, Governor Aiyedatiwa projected a new era of industrial growth anchored on strategic investments and economic diversification. He disclosed that approvals have been secured for key industrial projects, including a refinery, fertiliser and petrochemical plant, with groundbreaking expected in the first quarter of the year.
He added that plans for a seaport, petrochemical fertiliser plants and bitumen exploration are at advanced stages and will significantly boost agriculture, create jobs and enhance internally generated revenue.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for investment through fiscal responsibility, institutional efficiency and robust security architecture.
He stressed that security remains central to development, noting that sustained collaboration with security agencies and community-based intelligence networks is helping to safeguard lives, farmlands and investments across the State.
On infrastructure and power, Governor Aiyedatiwa said the State Government is working closely with electricity distribution companies to improve power supply and service delivery, while metering initiatives are ongoing to ensure fairness and efficiency.
He assured residents that although electricity remains expensive, his administration is committed to making power more affordable over time.
Governor Aiyedatiwa outlined a long-term vision for Ondo State, driven by knowledge-based growth, industrial competitiveness, digital innovation, environmental sustainability and strong democratic institutions.
He said the State is positioned not just to respond to change but to shape it, ensuring sustainable prosperity and inclusive opportunities for present and future generations.
In his remarks, the Secretary to the State Government and Chairman of the Ondo @50 Planning Committee, Dr Taiwo Fasoranti, expressed gratitude to stakeholders and urged the media to give wide coverage to the Golden Jubilee activities.
The event was attended by top government functionaries, including the Deputy Governor, Dr Olayide Adelami; the leadership of the Ondo State House of Assembly; members of the State Executive Council; political appointees; and other distinguished guests.
