The Federal Government has confirmed the uncovering of an alleged coup plot against the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following the conclusion of investigations into acts of indiscipline involving sixteen military officers.
This confirmation was contained in a press release issued by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), which disclosed that investigations into the officers—earlier arrested in October 2025 for breaches of service regulations, have now been concluded.
According to the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), findings from the comprehensive investigation revealed that some of the officers were involved in allegations bordering on plotting to overthrow the government, actions described as incompatible with the ethics, values, and professional standards of the military.
It will be recalled that reports of an alleged coup plot circulated widely in October 2025, but both the Federal Government and the military authorities at the time denied the claims, dismissing them as false and speculative. The controversy coincided with the cancellation of the national October 1 Independence Day parade, which further fueled public speculation.
The DHQ stated that officers found to have cases to answer will be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations, assuring that due process will be strictly followed.
The military authorities emphasized that the actions being taken are purely disciplinary, aimed at preserving order, discipline, and operational effectiveness within the Armed Forces.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain resolute in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority,” the statement added.
The development marks the first official confirmation by the Nigerian government that allegations of a coup plot during the Tinubu administration were substantiated following internal investigations.
