Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Johannesburg, South Africa, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit.
The development follows President Tinubu’s decision to remain in Nigeria to attend to urgent security matters arising from recent incidents in Kebbi, Kwara and Niger state.
According to a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications in the Office of the Vice President, President Tinubu postponed his scheduled trip to allow for additional security briefings after the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi, the attack on worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State and now abduction of students in St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary School in the Papiri community, Niger state
The invitation to the summit was extended by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who currently chairs the G20.
This year’s summit, holding from November 22 to 23 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, brings together leaders of the world’s major economies, the African Union, the European Union, and key global financial institutions.
Nigeria’s participation is expected to focus on economic cooperation, investment opportunities, and global development priorities, with Vice President Shettima standing in on behalf of President Tinubu.
