President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will on Thursday preside over a high-stakes Council of State meeting at the State House, Abuja, with the succession of INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, expected to be a major item on the agenda.
Reliable sources within the Presidency revealed that the meeting will also deliberate on the recent allegations by the United States Parliament accusing the Nigerian government of complicity in Christian-targeted killings, a claim that has generated widespread reactions across the country.
The insider disclosed that President Tinubu is expected to use the session to clarify Nigeria’s position and reaffirm his administration’s commitment to protecting all citizens, irrespective of religion or ethnicity.
Aside from the sensitive U.S. report and INEC leadership succession, discussions will also cover national security, state police proposals, and economic reforms aimed at stabilizing the nation.
A separate Police Council meeting will also hold Thursday, focusing on the creation of state police and other key policing strategies to address insecurity across the federation.
The Council of State, which serves as an advisory body to the President, includes:

- All former Presidents and Heads of State
- All former Chief Justices of Nigeria
- The President of the Senate
- The Speaker of the House of Representatives
- All State Governors
- The Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation
