The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man, Engr. Chibuike Azubike, who allegedly paraded himself as the “Obi of Lagos,” along with three accomplices, over an attempt to stage an unlawful installation ceremony in the state.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, by the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babasẹyi Oluseyi, the suspects were apprehended following intelligence reports that they had concluded plans to unveil a prototype of a purported ₦1.5 billion “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin, on Saturday, September 13, 2025.
Azubike, an indigene of Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom in Ideato North LGA of Imo State, was arrested alongside Chief Chibuzor Ani (57), Chief Martins Nwaodika (65), and Mr. Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi (41).
The police immediately sealed off the venue to prevent what they described as a deliberate attempt to mislead unsuspecting members of the public.
The Command noted that adequate security personnel, including conventional operatives, the Eko Strike Force, and other tactical squads, were deployed to ensure the planned event did not hold and to maintain peace in the area.
“All four suspects are currently in custody at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, while investigations continue. They will be charged to court at the conclusion of investigations,” the statement read.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, warned the public against falling victim to impostors seeking to exploit revered traditional institutions for selfish interests. He stressed that such actions are illegal, contrary to the statutes of Lagos State, and capable of disturbing public peace.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to firmly enforcing the law, safeguarding public order, and protecting the integrity of Lagos State’s cultural and traditional values.
