President Bola Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration who intend to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign their positions on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive, in line with provisions of the Electoral Act and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries, is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws and promoting a transparent political process.
A circular conveying the directive, signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and issued through the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, stated that the requirement applies to all categories of presidential appointees seeking elective offices.
Those affected include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, as well as directors-general and chief executive officers of federal government agencies, parastatals, commissions, and government-owned companies.
According to the directive, all affected officials are to submit their resignation letters through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on or before the stipulated deadline.
The President emphasised that the move is necessary to ensure fairness and provide a level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the elections, while also strengthening democratic institutions and promoting credible electoral processes in the country.
He urged all concerned appointees to comply strictly with the directive.
