The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has disclosed that the recent improvement in electricity supply across the country is a direct result of increased gas deliveries to power plants, not seasonal rainfall as widely speculated.
According to the Commission, gas-to-power supply in July 2025 hit its highest level in three months, with average daily deliveries rising by 3.48% month-on-month. Supply climbed from 833.86 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCF/D) in June to 862.86 MMSCF/D in July.
“This surge in gas supply to thermal power plants is the key factor behind the improvement Nigerians are experiencing in electricity, not rainfall,” NUPRC stated.
Industry experts note that since most of Nigeria’s power generation comes from gas-fired plants, the stability of supply from the upstream sector directly impacts electricity availability nationwide.
The Commission added that sustaining this momentum would require continuous investment in gas infrastructure, alongside government policies that guarantee reliable payments to gas suppliers and encourage further production growth.
