The Hon. Ogunbolude Johnson Unity Cup officially kicked off today at St. Frances Academy School in Igoba, Akure North, Ondo State, bringing together local sports administrators, community leaders, and football enthusiasts.
Organized by the Akure North Football Association, the grassroots tournament aims to foster community unity, discover raw sporting talent, and promote positive youth development across the local government area.
The opening ceremony was graced by the Executive Chairman of Akure North Local Government, Hon. Ogunbolude Johnson, alongside key members of the local football governing body including Chairman Adepoju Banjo Ayodeji, Vice Chairman Kehinde Musa, Member Omoniyi Muyiwa, and Secretary Saliu Lawal.
Representatives from the Referees Council, football stakeholders, and club owners were also in attendance to support the initiative. Reaffirming his commitment to empowering local youths, Hon. Ogunbolude emphasized the crucial role of grassroots sports in nurturing future stars and strengthening ties among neighboring communities.
The tournament opened with an action-packed day of matches that delivered plenty of goals for supporters in attendance. Opening the fixtures at 8:45 am, Brave Eagle FA earned a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Academy FC in a high-scoring encounter at St. Francis, Igoba. In the second fixture of the morning at 11:00 am, Ipole City FC staged a dominant performance, decisively defeating The Wise Men FC with a clean 4-0 sweep. The afternoon action saw Emergency FC secure a comfortable 2-0 victory over Osi United FC in their 2:00 pm kickoff. Wrapping up the opening day at 4:00 pm, Obaile FC and Eleven Wise Men FC fought to a competitive 1-1 draw, sharing the points in a closely contested match.
