The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has declared a nationwide emergency over the deplorable condition of hostels in tertiary institutions, describing the worsening accommodation crisis as a threat to the welfare, security and academic success of millions of students.
The declaration was made by the newly inaugurated leadership of the association, which lamented that many hostels across universities, polytechnics and colleges of education have deteriorated due to years of neglect, poor maintenance and inadequate investment in student welfare.
According to NANS, students are being forced to live in overcrowded hostels lacking basic amenities such as potable water, electricity, functional sanitation facilities and proper security.
The association warned that the poor state of accommodation has exposed students to health risks, insecurity and an unconducive learning environment.
As part of its response, NANS announced the temporary relocation of its national headquarters to Anambra State, saying the move is aimed at intensifying efforts to secure the release of detained student leaders and to coordinate nationwide advocacy for improved welfare and the protection of students’ rights.
The association maintained that the relocation symbolizes its resolve to remain at the forefront of defending the interests of Nigerian students while drawing national attention to the accommodation crisis facing higher institutions.
NANS called on the Federal Government, state governments, governing councils and management of tertiary institutions to immediately declare a state of emergency on campus infrastructure, especially student hostels, and embark on urgent rehabilitation and construction of modern accommodation facilities.
The student body also urged education stakeholders to prioritize investments in campus infrastructure, insisting that quality education cannot be achieved without safe, decent and conducive living conditions for students.
NANS vowed to sustain consultations, peaceful advocacy and nationwide engagements until concrete steps are taken to address the deteriorating state of hostels and improve the overall welfare of students across the country.
