The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken delivery of three new AW109 Trekker Type B helicopters as part of the Federal Government’s ongoing military modernization programme aimed at enhancing national security and boosting the Armed Forces’ operational capabilities.
The helicopters successfully completed factory acceptance tests in Italy after undergoing rigorous technical inspections and flight evaluations by a joint delegation from the Nigerian Air Force and the Ministry of Defence.
The exercise confirmed that the aircraft met all operational and contractual requirements ahead of their deployment to Nigeria.
According to the Air Force, the newly acquired helicopters will enhance intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations, provide close air support for troops, conduct armed escort missions, combat search and rescue, medical evacuation, and other critical military operations across the country.
The acquisition comes as Nigeria continues to intensify efforts to combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other emerging security threats. Military authorities believe the advanced helicopters will improve rapid response capabilities, increase operational reach, and strengthen joint operations between air and ground forces.
The three aircraft are part of a broader defence procurement programme that includes additional helicopters and fighter aircraft, reflecting the Federal Government’s commitment to modernizing the Nigerian Air Force and improving the country’s capacity to safeguard lives, protect territorial integrity and confront evolving security challenges.
