Atlético Madrid have reached an agreement with Sporting CP for the signing of Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand in a deal worth €40 million plus performance-related add-ons, bringing an end to weeks of transfer negotiations.
The 27-year-old is expected to sign a long-term contract that will keep him at the Spanish club until June 2031, with all parties now exchanging the final paperwork before the transfer is officially announced.
Hjulmand, who captained Sporting CP and emerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after defensive midfielders, is scheduled to travel to Madrid immediately to undergo his medical examination and complete the formalities of his move.
The Danish international had already agreed personal terms with Atlético Madrid, with negotiations between the two clubs focusing mainly on the transfer fee and bonus structure.
The midfielder is expected to become one of Atlético’s key additions ahead of the new season as manager Diego Simeone continues to strengthen his squad for domestic and European competitions.
Hjulmand joined Sporting from Italian side Lecce in 2023 and quickly established himself as one of the club’s most influential players, earning the captain’s armband through his leadership, composure and impressive performances in midfield.
His arrival is expected to add steel, experience and tactical discipline to Atlético Madrid’s midfield as the club prepares for the 2026/27 campaign.
