Medical Doctors in Ondo State had fully supported the 14 days ultimatum issued by NMA Ondo State which expires on Tuesday, 28th April, 2026, a move that could escalate into an industrial action if their demands are not attended to.
In a press statement released on Thursday, the Chairman of National Association Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP) Ondo State, Dr. Obe Richard, informed the Press that this decision was taken during the statutory Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) of the NAGGMDP Ondo State held on Tuesday 21st April, 2026 at NMA House, Igbatoro Road, Akure.
A critical concern raised by the Chairman was the non-implementation of key Federal Government circulars that affects our welfare and salaries.
They are the Review of CONMESS in 25th July, 2025, Accoutrement Allowance in July 2025 and Consequential
Adjustment of Salaries in 19th November, 2025. We made several efforts to ensure that the State Government attends to our request to no avail.
The Chairman further stated that the severe shortage of Medical personnel across the State is worrisome.
He stated that some General Hospitals are operating with as few as one Doctor to serve an entire Local Government leading to extreme overwork, fatigue and exhaustion among our members.
This not only compromises patient care but also endangers the lives of both healthcare workers and the public.
The Chairman bemoaned the Japa Syndrome in Ondo State which he strongly believed was avoidable. He further stated that it was an internal Japa as members migrate from Ondo State to neighbouring states and Federal establishments in the State whose salaries and working conditions were better than Ondo State.
To avert the impending strike, the NAGGMDP Ondo State has put forth the following demands for immediate Government attention:
Immediate Implementation of all Federal Government circulars and the payment of all arrears from the effective date as provided by the circular.
Immediate payment of the Accoutrement Allowances.
Urgent recruitment of Doctors and other Health workers into the services of Ondo State to ease the work overload
Prompt payment of promotion arrears from July 2024 to Dec 2024.
The Chairman further stated that the Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) unanimously agreed that NAGGMDP Ondo State is fully in tandem with the resolutions of the Ondo NMA as earlier enumerated to Government and will proceed on an indefinite strike, if need be, stemming from failure of Government to attend to our demands.
He also stated that failure to meet the above demands within the stipulated dates, the Association shall not be able to guarantee industrial harmony in the health sector.
Finally, Dr. Obe affirmed the Association’s commitment to the provision of essential Healthcare to the public but urged the State Government to swiftly address the above demands to avert an avoidable industrial action.
