The Senate has approved a ₦50 million support package for families affected by the tragic Oriire school kidnapping in Oyo State, offering financial assistance to those who lost loved ones during the abduction and subsequent rescue operation.
The intervention, announced during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, provides ₦10 million each to the families of five victims who died in connection with the incident. The beneficiaries include the families of three security operatives who lost their lives while participating in the rescue mission, as well as two teachers who were killed during the kidnapping ordeal.
Lawmakers described the donation as a gesture of compassion and national solidarity, paying tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the fallen heroes who played critical roles in the rescue efforts.
During deliberations, senators also called for increased support for victims of insecurity across the country and urged security agencies to intensify operations against kidnappers and other criminal elements. They stressed the need for sustained efforts to protect schools, communities and vulnerable citizens from recurring attacks.
The Senate further reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening national security and improving the welfare of families affected by violent crimes, while commending the security forces for their role in securing the release of the abducted pupils and teachers.
The Oriire kidnapping, which drew widespread national attention, has continued to fuel calls for stronger security measures and enhanced protection of educational institutions across the country.
