The Federal Government has approved the construction of a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service for Kano State, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at transforming urban transportation, easing traffic congestion and stimulating economic growth across the state’s metropolitan area.
Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, disclosed the approval while addressing members of the state contingent that participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition held in Borno State.
According to the Governor, the rail project is designed to deliver a modern, efficient and affordable mass transit system that will connect key districts within the Kano metropolis, improve mobility for residents and enhance commercial activities.
Governor Yusuf said the approval reflects the benefits of the state’s renewed alignment with the Federal Government, noting that the decision was strategic and geared towards attracting critical development projects capable of accelerating Kano’s socio-economic growth.
He described the Metropolitan Rail Service as a landmark intervention that will reposition Kano as a major transportation hub in Northern Nigeria, while also boosting investment and improving the quality of life of the people.
The Governor assured that the Kano State Government will work closely with relevant federal agencies to ensure transparent implementation of the project and the delivery of maximum benefits to residents.
He expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for approving the rail project and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to complementing federal initiatives through supportive policies and infrastructure development.
