The Federal Government has officially deployed 10,000 trained Forest Guards across the country as part of renewed efforts to strengthen security and protect communities from criminal activities.
National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who announced the development, said the initiative is a major component of President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s security strategy, targeting all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The Forest Guards, drawn largely from forest communities, have been armed and trained by the military, Civil Defence, and other security agencies to safeguard natural reserves and tackle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and illegal mining.
Ribadu explained that the new outfit would function as a localized security force in difficult-to-access terrains where conventional police and military operations are limited.
“With their knowledge of the environment, the Forest Guards will enhance surveillance, gather intelligence, and ensure there is no hiding place for criminals,” Ribadu said.
The government assured Nigerians that the deployment will boost national security and complement existing security agencies in restoring peace and stability.
