The much-anticipated Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LMRT) Red Line officially commenced commercial operations today, signaling a new era for public transportation in Nigeria’s bustling megacity.
Stretching 27 kilometers from Agbado to Oyingbo, the Red Line is expected to revolutionize commuting in Lagos by providing a fast, efficient, and reliable alternative to the city’s notorious traffic.
With eight strategically located stations at Oyingbo, Yaba, Mushin, Oshodi, Ikeja, Agege, Iju, and Agbado, the Red Line is designed to cater to the needs of Lagosians from various parts of the city.
Officials project that the service will accommodate around 500,000 passengers daily once fully operational, easing the movement of Lagos residents and boosting economic activities.
Speaking on the launch, the project’s spokesperson emphasized the city’s mission to create a connected and efficient Lagos:
“We’re on a mission to keep Lagos moving, and the Red Line is a key part of our vision to create a seamlessly connected city. It is also our second rail system to become operational in less than two years.”
The Red Line is the second LMRT service to launch within a two-year period, following the successful deployment of the Blue Line. This expansion reflects Lagos State’s commitment to enhancing its transportation infrastructure.
Daily passenger services will begin at 6:00 AM from Agbado, with a second train departing from Iju Station at 7:30 AM. Commuters are advised to have their Cowry Cards ready for a seamless boarding experience.
Authorities have urged Lagosians to respect the new infrastructure, stating, “Just as with the Blue Line and any other public infrastructure, remember that this project belongs to all of us.
Let’s treat it with the respect it deserves. Vandalism or disruptions will not be tolerated—together, we can ensure that our trains remain a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.”
