In a major escalation, Iran launched more than 180 ballistic missiles into Israel early Tuesday, following an order from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The missile barrage, which targeted central and southern Israel, prompted an immediate response from the Israeli military, which claimed its air defense systems intercepted many of the incoming missiles.
Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, spokesperson for the Israeli military, stated,
“Our air defenses successfully intercepted the majority of the missiles, though some did land in central and southern regions.” So far, no injuries have been reported, despite the scale of the attack.
In defense of the missile strikes, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that Iran is “fully ready for any retaliation.
” The Iranian mission to the United Nations characterized the missile launches as a response to “terrorist acts” by Israel, further raising the stakes in the already tense relationship between the two nations.
As the situation continues to unfold, both sides remain on high alert for further developments.
