The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has resigned from office, citing pressing family challenges as the reason for his decision.
Presidency sources revealed that his resignation followed a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, where he was directed to step down.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development, stating that an official statement would be issued soon to clarify the circumstances surrounding the resignation and the leadership transition.
According to sources, Egbetokun will be succeeded by Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, who currently heads the Force Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Annex in Lagos.
Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd indigenous Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023, and his appointment was confirmed by the Police Council on October 31, 2023.
Although he was initially due for retirement on September 4, 2024, upon attaining the age of 60, an amendment to the Police Act by the National Assembly had extended his tenure to a full four-year term, expected to end on October 31, 2027.
His resignation, however, brings an unexpected end to his tenure, paving the way for a new leadership at the helm of the Nigeria Police Force, pending official confirmation from the Presidency.
