Tension enveloped Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the Executive Chairman, Hon. Ogunbolude Johnson, alleged that he and other leaders were attacked during the All Progressives Congress (APC) Ward Congress held in Ayetoro Ward 3.
The congress, scheduled to take place at St. Victor’s Mega Catholic School, Iju, was reportedly disrupted by some individuals alleged to have invaded and hijacked the exercise, causing panic and confusion among party members.
Hon. Johnson said he intervened in his capacity as the Chief Security Officer of the Local Government to verify reports of a parallel congress and restore order but was allegedly assaulted in the process.
According to him, “I moved to the venue to ensure peace and confirm what was happening, but I was attacked alongside other leaders. I sustained injuries, and several party members were also beaten.”
Sources said the alleged attackers were led by a party chieftain, Hon. Saka Yusuf, and were reportedly accompanied by uniformed military personnel, a development that further heightened tension in the area.
Several party members were reportedly injured during the violence, with some taken to hospital for treatment.
The incident also led to destruction of property, including damage to the vehicle of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor, Hon. Akindele Adeniyi.
The violence was said to have extended to Ita-Ogbolu, where suspected thugs allegedly attacked party faithful and destroyed vehicles, leaving residents and party members in fear.
Party stakeholders have expressed concern over the incident, calling on relevant authorities to investigate the attack and bring those responsible to justice, warning that such violence threatens internal democracy and party unity.
