The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ondo State chapter, has raised fresh concerns over the absence of a standard sports stadium in the state, warning that the situation is denying Ondo valuable economic opportunities and slowing down sports development.
The position was part of resolutions reached at the association’s congress held on Thursday, February 12, 2026, in Akure, under the leadership of its chairman, Segun Giwa.
SWAN said it was deeply worried that, more than five decades after its creation, Ondo still lacks a befitting sports facility capable of hosting major national competitions.
According to the association, this infrastructure gap has forced the state to the sidelines while others benefit from the economic and social gains that come with hosting tournaments.
Members noted that beyond the loss of prestige, the state is missing out on tourism, job creation, and business activities that usually accompany major sporting events.
While congratulating Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the people of the state on the recent 50th anniversary celebration, SWAN expressed disappointment that many athletes who brought honour to Ondo were not recognised during the celebrations.
The association said it would take steps to organise its own programme to honour deserving sports personalities from the state.
The congress also urged greater cooperation among sports stakeholders, pointing to concerns about the working relationship between the Ondo State Football Agency and other football authorities. It warned that poor coordination could further weaken the fortunes of state-owned teams, including Sunshine Stars and Sunshine Queens.
SWAN particularly frowned at the recent salary cuts affecting players and officials, describing the decision as ill-timed and lacking proper communication. The association stressed that such actions could damage morale at a critical point in the season.
Overall, the sports writers insisted that without urgent investment in modern sports infrastructure, especially a standard stadium, Ondo State risks falling further behind in Nigeria’s sporting landscape.
