The 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season began on a pulsating note Friday evening, as Remo Stars and Rivers United played out a 1–1 draw in the opening fixture at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Kuto, Abeokuta.
Rivers United stunned the home crowd just three minutes in when forward Aniekeme Okon capitalized on a loose ball to net the first goal of the new campaign. The early strike silenced the usually lively Remo Stars faithful.
But the champions responded swiftly. In the 9th minute, star striker Victor Mbaoma showed his trademark poise inside the box, finishing calmly to restore parity and reignite the stadium atmosphere.
Remo Stars suffered a setback later in the first half when Mbaoma picked up a knock and was forced off, replaced by Adama Goita, prompting an early tactical shuffle for the hosts.
The second half saw both teams tighten up defensively, with Rivers United threatening on the counter through their quick wingers, while Remo Stars pressed for a winner, urged on by their home fans.
The game’s major flashpoint came deep into stoppage time when Rivers United defender Temple Emekayi was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge, marking the first dismissal of the new NPFL season.
Despite the late drama, the scoreline remained unchanged as both teams settled for a point each
