The 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season kicks off today with Bendel Insurance facing El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri, and all eyes will be on centre-back Dennis Chigozie as he begins another campaign in the heart of the defence.
Chigozie fondly called Gombe, who wears jersey number 14, was a standout performer for Insurance last season, featuring in 33 matches. His consistency and commanding presence at the back helped the Benin Arsenal mount a serious push for a continental ticket, though they eventually finished sixth on the log with 53 points.
A former Sunshine Stars player, Chigozie has built a reputation as one of the league’s most reliable defenders, strong in aerial duels, calm under pressure, and a vocal leader in organizing the backline.
Speaking ahead of the new season, the energetic defender reaffirmed his commitment to the club’s ambitions. “Last season, we came very close to qualifying for the continent, and that experience has made us even hungrier. This year, our target is clear, to compete for the NPFL title and secure a continental slot. Personally, I’m ready to give my best again for the team,” Chigozie said.
With Bendel Insurance starting their campaign far away in Maiduguri against El-Kanemi Warriors, Chigozie’s leadership and experience at the back will be crucial as the Benin-based side seeks a strong start.
Fans of the club will be hoping that with Chigozie’s resilience and the collective determination of the squad, Bendel Insurance can turn last season’s near-miss into a historic run for both silverware and continental football.
