President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, whose current term was due to expire on August 31, 2025.
The extension comes on the heels of Mr. Adeniyi’s recent appointment as Chairman of the World Customs Organisation (WCO), a prestigious global position that places Nigeria at the heart of international trade and customs policy-making. This appointment marks a historic milestone, as Adeniyi becomes the first Nigerian to lead the global body.
According to sources, the extension is aimed at allowing Adeniyi to complete his term as WCO Chairman while continuing key reform efforts at home.
His leadership on the global stage is seen as a strategic advantage for Nigeria, offering the nation greater influence in global trade negotiations, border policy, and customs innovations.
Meanwhile, In an official statement, the Presidency confirmed that President Tinubu approved the one-year tenure extension for Mr. Adeniyi to enable him to consolidate ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Customs Service. These include the modernisation of customs operations, the implementation of the National Single Window Project, and the execution of Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The statement read:
