Kogi West Senator and former lawmaker, Dino Melaye, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s inability to provide a credible alternative to Nigeria’s current political challenges.
Melaye’s resignation was detailed in a letter dated July 30, 2025, addressed to the PDP Ward 1 Chairman in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State. In the letter, the outspoken politician expressed deep disappointment in the PDP’s capacity to rescue Nigeria from what he termed “the prevailing political cankerworms.”

The former senator, a vocal critic of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), had long been associated with reformist movements within the opposition bloc. His departure follows growing internal dissent and realignment within the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Melaye, a close ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has recently been linked with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he is reportedly playing a strategic role in coalition-building among opposition parties.
His resignation marks yet another high-profile defection from the PDP following the formation of a broader opposition alliance aimed at challenging the APC-led federal government in the upcoming elections.
Political observers believe Melaye’s move could significantly shift political dynamics in Kogi State and beyond, especially as opposition parties begin to consolidate forces under new leadership structures and reform agendas.
