In a dramatic turn of events, Mudashiru Obasa has been re-elected as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, seven weeks after his controversial removal. Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I, was reinstated on Monday following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who had briefly held the position.
His return to leadership came after a nomination by former Majority Leader Noheem Adams, signaling a shift in the intense power struggle that had engulfed the 40-member Assembly since January 2025.
Obasa, who first assumed office as Speaker in 2015, had been ousted on January 13, 2025, when more than two-thirds of lawmakers voted him out over allegations of misconduct.
Following his removal, Meranda was elected as the first female Speaker in Lagos State’s history.
However, Obasa rejected the impeachment, insisting it was unlawful as it occurred during his absence from the country.
Tensions escalated over the weeks, with security forces intervening amid clashes between lawmakers and legislative workers.
Obasa made a bold return to the Assembly Complex on February 27, escorted by armed security personnel.
His reappearance reignited the leadership dispute, with some lawmakers maintaining loyalty to Meranda.
However, with Meranda stepping down, Obasa has reclaimed his position, marking the latest twist in Lagos State’s prolonged legislative crisis.
