In a bold move aimed at addressing the growing health and economic threats posed by counterfeit, fake, and adulterated beverages, Nigerian youths have launched a nationwide campaign against these harmful products.
This initiative, which is particularly focused on the Southwestern region of Nigeria, aims to protect public health and safeguard the nation’s economy.
“Counterfeit and adulterated beverages are not just a health hazard but a direct attack on our economy,” said Kemi Adeyemi, one of the key voices behind the campaign. “These products continue to flood the market, especially in the Southwest, where our youth are the most vulnerable. It’s high time we took a stand and say NO to these dangerous items.”
The rise in counterfeit beverages, which often contain harmful chemicals, has led to increasing cases of food poisoning, organ damage, and even fatalities. Local communities, especially the youth, have been exposed to dangerous levels of fake goods, resulting in a public health crisis.
The campaign calls on all Nigerians, particularly those in the Yoruba-speaking regions, both at home and abroad, to unite and tackle this issue.
“We must stand together,” said Olumide Ogunleye, a spokesperson for the campaign. “Whether you are in Lagos, Ibadan, or in the diaspora, your voice and action can help turn the tide against this menace. We urge everyone to take responsibility by reporting fake products and supporting initiatives that prioritize health and safety.”
“We have seen that the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is doing its best, but it is overwhelmed due to the extensive coverage,” the group stated.
The group has also called for stronger enforcement of food safety regulations and harsher penalties for offenders. They believe this collective effort can lead to healthier communities and a more sustainable economy.
The campaign, set to commence in the Southwest region, is designed to gradually expand to other parts of the country.
The group is collaborating with National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control. , state governments, and other relevant authorities to tackle the menace effectively within a short period.
