In a remarkable act of compassion and statesmanship, Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has granted clemency to 40 convicts as part of activities marking his 60th birthday.
This act of mercy underscores the governor’s unwavering commitment to justice reform and rehabilitation.
The announcement was made by Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, who also chairs the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
According to Ajulo, the governor’s decision was based on the recommendations of the council, emphasizing rehabilitation and the hope of reintegration into society for deserving inmates.
“Governor Aiyedatiwa’s compassionate gesture reflects his belief in the transformative power of second chances,” Ajulo stated. “This decision is a vital part of his administration’s ongoing justice sector reforms, ensuring a balance between justice, mercy, and societal good.”
Out of the 40 beneficiaries, 15 convicts are set for outright release effective January 12, 2025. Additionally, death sentences for several inmates have been commuted to life imprisonment, while others have had their prison terms reduced.
Dr. Ajulo explained that the council’s deliberations were informed by recommendations from correctional authorities, legal experts, and community representatives.
Factors considered included the nature of the offenses, duration of incarceration, age, health, and behaviour of the inmates.
The signing of the clemency orders coincided with the governor’s birthday, an occasion he chose to mark with an act of grace rather than celebration.
In deference to the recent passing of the Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Tayo Oluwatuyi (Tuykana), Governor Aiyedatiwa had earlier announced the cancellation of all birthday festivities.
Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, emphasized the significance of the governor’s action, stating,
“This decision showcases Governor Aiyedatiwa’s unwavering dedication to fostering a justice system that prioritizes reform over retribution, and to extending grace and mercy to those deserving of a second chance.”
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s clemency is in accordance with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), further solidifying his reputation as a leader committed to both the rule of law and the welfare of his people.
