Ashysam FC has emerged as the 2024 champions of the BOF Unity Cup, thrilling fans in the Ondo South Senatorial District with a memorable performance.
The annual competition, now in its fifth edition, drew a capacity crowd to the stadium, showcasing the unifying power of football and community spirit.
A tightly contested final saw Ashysam FC edge out Invincible FC of Ore with a late goal by Tonibor Ebi. The lone strike, set up by a long-range pass from David Omo, sealed a dramatic 1-0 victory for the new champions.
Speaking after the match, Chief Bamidele Omosehin, the Lisa of Osooro Kingdom and chairman of the Bamidele Omosehin Foundation (BOF), expressed his delight at the event’s success.
“This competition is more than football; it is a platform for unity, talent discovery, and grassroots development,” he said.
“As part of our key programs, we will continue to give back to our people and communities to help them sustain and improve their well-being,” he added.
Individual brilliance was recognized as David Omo of Ashysam FC bagged the Most Valuable Player award, while his teammate Kalejaye Sola emerged as the tournament’s top scorer with four goals.
Invincible FC’s Ajiboye Abdullahi was lauded as the best goalkeeper, while Eagles Academy FC clinched the Most Behaved Team award.
Trophies, medals, and cash prizes were presented to deserving winners, making the event a memorable one for participants and fans alike.
The final was not just about football. Widows, orphans, and the less privileged across the six local governments in the Ondo South Senatorial District received empowerment packages as part of this year’s edition of the program.
Pastor Olusegun Aiyerin, Ondo State Commissioner for Commerce, Industry, and Cooperative Services, commended Chief Omosehin for his commitment to grassroots development.
“This initiative is a shining example of how sports and empowerment can bring positive change to our communities,” Aiyerin remarked.
The grand occasion was graced by dignitaries and traditional rulers, including HRM Oba Gbadebo Bajowa (Rebuja of Osooro), HRM Oba Obatuga Adetoye (Jegun of Idepe-Okitipupa), HRM Oba Festus Olumoyegun (Oniju of Iju-Odo), HRM Oba Earnest Idepefo (Majuwa of Morubodo-Ilutitun), and HRM Oba Ayo Oguntusin (Odofin of Iju-Oke).
Their presence underscored the cultural and social significance of the BOF Unity Cup, which continues to serve as a beacon of unity and hope in Ondo South.
