In a momentous event marking the University of Medical Sciences’ (UNIMED) 6th Convocation ceremony, Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, on Friday performed the groundbreaking for the university’s new Senate Building in Ondo City.
The ₦1 billion project, described by the Governor as a “strategic investment in the institution’s future,” reaffirms the state government’s dedication to enhancing educational and healthcare infrastructure.
Governor Aiyedatiwa stressed the importance of the project, calling it a reflection of the administration’s commitment to quality.
“The quality of infrastructure and human resources in an institution such as UNIMED is of utmost importance,” Governor Aiyedatiwa remarked. “This Senate Building will stand as a symbol of our collective dedication to excellence in education and healthcare.”
The event was further enriched by the conferment of honorary degrees on notable individuals, including Oba Victor Adesimbo Kiladejo, the Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom; former Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko; and Chief Isaac Akintade.
The Osemawe also officially assumed office as the university’s new Chancellor.
Governor Aiyedatiwa highlighted his administration’s tangible support for the university, including the release of ₦500 million as the first tranche for the Senate Building and ₦250 million in counterpart funding for the Olu Akinkugbe Faculty of Pharmacy.
He commended the university for its impressive achievements, celebrating its decade of academic excellence and growth.
Addressing the graduating students, the Governor urged them to uphold values of compassion, innovation, and lifelong learning.
“You are the torchbearers of our shared vision for a brighter future. Carry these values into the world as you embark on your careers,” he said.
UNIMED’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, lauded the institution’s progress, emphasizing the university’s efforts to introduce innovative programs addressing modern educational and professional needs.
He credited the administration’s financial contributions for enabling significant strides in the institution’s infrastructure.
“Our growth is a testament to our commitment to academic excellence,” Prof. Fatusi said. “We have successfully produced three cohorts of medical doctors within a decade, and our trajectory remains upward.”
The ceremony underscored Ondo State’s continued investment in education and healthcare, positioning UNIMED as a leader in medical sciences in Nigeria.
