In a heartfelt tribute to Nigeria’s fallen heroes, the Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has inaugurated the Emblem Appeal Fund to mark the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
The event, held at the Cocoa Conference Centre on Tuesday, underscored the state government’s commitment to honouring the sacrifices of military personnel and supporting their families.
Speaking at the launch, Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized the emblem’s significance as more than a ceremonial symbol.
“The launch of this emblem is not just a ceremonial act; it is a solemn pledge to support our veterans, provide them with the recognition they deserve, and honor the values for which they have fought so bravely,” he stated.
The Governor pledged state resources to the Nigerian Legion, Ondo State Chapter, with a focus on enhancing the welfare of ex-servicemen, widows, and dependents of fallen soldiers.
He called on corporate bodies, institutions, and individuals to contribute generously to the fund.
“On our part as a responsible and responsive government, we shall not shy away from paying attention to the welfare of widows and dependent relatives of our fallen heroes within the limit of our resources,” Governor Aiyedatiwa assured.
He highlighted the hardships faced by the families of the deceased and injured military personnel, pledging empowerment initiatives for widows to help them lead dignified lives.
The ceremony also outlined activities leading to the remembrance day, including a Jum’mat Service on January 10, 2025, a Christian Service on January 12, and a Military Parade with a Wreath-Laying Ceremony on January 15 at the Government Cenotaph, Alagbaka, Akure.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Lola Fagbemi, commended the Governor for his consistent support of programs aimed at improving the lives of veterans and their families.
“The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is a significant occasion to honor the sacrifices of military personnel who laid down their lives for the nation,” she remarked, urging stakeholders to contribute generously to the appeal fund.
Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Ondo State Chapter, Col. Olu Apata (Rtd), praised the state government’s commitment, describing the emblem as “a symbol of patriotism and unity.” He encouraged citizens to wear the emblem with pride as a mark of respect for the Armed Forces’ sacrifices.
Dignitaries at the event included Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Adelami, Secretary to the State Government Hon. Tayo Oluwatuyi, Chief of Staff Prince Segun Omojuwa, APC State Chairman Emgr. Ade Adetimehin, traditional rulers, and security officials.
The ceremony set the stage for a solemn and patriotic remembrance celebration.
