The Ondo State government has donated essential health kits and medical supplies to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre Clinic in Akure to enhance healthcare services for media professionals in the state.
This initiative, under the Orange Health Insurance Scheme (ORANGHIS), aims to improve health outcomes for journalists and support the state’s goal of universal health coverage.
Presenting the materials at the NUJ Press Centre on Friday, Prof. Simidele Odimayo, Special Adviser on Health to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, described the NUJ as a vital partner in health promotion.
He assured that the state government would consider the union’s request to enroll journalists, especially those not working with the federal or state government, in its health insurance scheme.
“With these tools, healthcare workers in NUJ can respond more effectively to medical emergencies and routine care, ensuring better outcomes for journalists in Ondo State,” Odimayo said.
“These programs represent a strategic approach to bridging healthcare gaps in the state. By focusing on vulnerable groups and equipping healthcare facilities, we are building a sustainable healthcare system accessible to all.”
Odimayo also highlighted the state’s efforts to combat hepatitis, revealing that treatments for identified cases have commenced, with plans to expand outreach in 2024.
He emphasized that the government’s transformative healthcare programs focus on affordability and accessibility for all residents.
The Director-General of the Ondo State Health Contributory Commission, Dr. Abiodun Oyeneyin, reaffirmed the commitment to inclusivity and collaboration, particularly in extending health insurance to private-sector journalists.
“We aim to make Ondo State a leader in health insurance coverage in Nigeria,” Oyeneyin said. “Our programs are designed to ensure that no resident is left behind, particularly those in rural and informal sectors.
The equipment distributed today will enhance healthcare delivery at all levels.”
Responding, NUJ State Chairman Prince Leke Adegbite praised the state government for its support and renewed the union’s appeal for journalists’ inclusion in the health insurance scheme.
“We remain committed to supporting the government’s health initiatives by ensuring accurate and timely dissemination of information to the public,” Adegbite stated.
The donated materials are expected to enhance the clinic’s capacity to provide quality care while advancing Ondo State’s vision of universal health coverage.
