Governor of Ondo State, Hon Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Group Captain Ita David Ikpeme (rtd), CON, the State’s first Military Administrator.
Ikpeme, who passed away at the age of 89 after a brief illness, played a pivotal role in establishing the administrative foundation of Ondo State.
The late Ikpeme, then serving as a Wing Commander, governed Ondo State from its inception on February 3, 1976, until 1978, during the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo.
His death was officially communicated to Governor Aiyedatiwa on Wednesday by his family in a letter signed by Iquo Ikpeme.
In a heartfelt tribute, Governor Aiyedatiwa lauded Ikpeme’s contributions to the State, describing him as “a distinguished statesman, a devoted leader, and administrator who laid the groundwork for the State’s progress.”
He emphasized the enduring legacy Ikpeme leaves behind, not just in Ondo State but also in his native Calabar, Cross River State.
“The people of Ondo State will continue to remember the legacy of Group Captain Ita David Ikpeme through his significant contributions to the development of the State as our pioneer leader,” Governor Aiyedatiwa said.
The Governor extended his condolences to the Ikpeme family and assured them of the State’s support during this period of grief.
“We pray for the repose of his soul and for strength and solace for his loved ones as they navigate this difficult time,” he added.
In a gesture of respect and gratitude, the State Government pledged to assist the family in organizing a befitting burial for the late military administrator.
