The Ondo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has announced an exciting line-up of activities for its 2024 Press Week, themed “Setting the Agenda Amidst Electioneering Paradox and Elusive Economic Development in Nigeria: The Media as the Fourth Estate of the Realm.”
Key dignitaries expected to grace the weeklong event include Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa; former Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko; Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire; Hon. Dr. Abiola Makinde, and Minister of Youth Development, Hon. Ayo Wisdom Olawande.
In a press statement issued by the Chairman of the Press Week Organizing Committee, Omosileola Adesoye-Ajayi, and Secretary, Fidelis David, the celebrations are slated to begin on Sunday, December 8, 2024, and culminate with a grand finale on Friday, December 13, 2024, at the NUJ Press Centre, Alagbaka, Akure.
“The Press Week is a platform to recognize the critical role of journalists in nation-building, particularly in navigating Nigeria’s socio-economic and political challenges. It also honors individuals who have made remarkable contributions to various sectors,” the statement said.
Highlights of the Weeklong Celebration
- Sunday, December 8: A Thanksgiving Service at Salvation Gospel International Centre, Akure, will officially open the event.
- Monday, December 9: Charity visitations and a free medical outreach for journalists and their families will take place at the NUJ Press Centre Clinic.
- Tuesday, December 10: The opening ceremony and symposium, featuring lead speakers Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, Dr. Abass Mimiko, Barr. Olumuyiwa Adu, and Prof. Olusegun Adegbulugbe, will take center stage. Governor Aiyedatiwa will declare the celebration open as the Grand Patron and Special Guest of Honor.
- Wednesday, December 11: Activities include a health walk led by Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Adelami, a children’s party, and indoor games finals.
- Thursday, December 12: A novelty football match at Ondo State Sports Complex and a Jazz/Asun Night will provide entertainment.
- Friday, December 13: The week concludes with a Jumat Service, followed by the Grand Finale, Dinner, and Awards Night.
The NUJ will honor notable individuals for their contributions to various fields, including:
- Prof. Olusegun Adegbulugbe – Educationist and community leader
- Dr. Seun Osamaye – Adviser on Women’s Affairs
- Hon. Chris Ayebusiwa – Lawmaker, Okitipupa Constituency 1
- Engr. Margaret Oguntala – President, Nigerian Society of Engineers
- Comrade Ademola Odudu – NURTW Ondo Chairman
- Mr. Olumide Origunloye – Proprietor, Crest FM
- Dr. Niyi Ijogun – CEO, Premier Hotels
