Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, called on Christian leaders to pray for peace and unity as the state prepares for its November 16 gubernatorial election.
Addressing an assembly of faith leaders at St. David’s Anglican Cathedral, Ijomu, Akure, on Monday, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to governance rooted in Christian values and expressed his gratitude for the church’s continuous support and guidance.
“I am one of you, a born-again Christian, and I understand the spiritual responsibilities that come with leadership,” Governor Aiyedatiwa said. “The Ondo State government is anchored on the body of Christ, and as such, we cannot afford to fail.
I earnestly ask that you continue to pray for us, for wisdom in governance, and for the upcoming elections to be peaceful and just.”
The governor underscored the significance of prayers as the state enters an “electoral period crucial to our future,” and called on the Christian community to intercede for peace, harmony, and a transparent electoral process.
Responding, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Ondo State, Reverend Anselm Ologunwa, commended Governor Aiyedatiwa’s dedication to addressing issues facing the Christian community.
“We appreciate your dedication to our concerns and your promptness in addressing matters that affect the body of Christ. Your leadership is indeed commendable,” he stated.
Reverend Ologunwa added that CAN, as a non-partisan organization, remains committed to Christian values and the welfare of Ondo’s people.
“Our duty is to promote the teachings of Jesus Christ, regardless of political affiliations,” he said, noting the critical role of ethical leadership in fostering peace and economic progress.
He further announced a three-day prayer session organized by CAN, beginning on November 10, to seek divine intervention for the state’s well-being and electoral success.
In a final appeal, Reverend Ologunwa urged the government to return schools originally founded by Christian organizations to their owners.
“These institutions were established on principles that build strong moral and academic foundations. Restoring them will benefit our society immensely,” he noted.
The meeting concluded with prayers for the governor and the state’s leadership, as participants looked forward to a peaceful, free, and fair election.
