•••Product Contains Harmful Chemical BMHCA, Poses Risks to Reproductive Health and Skin
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued an urgent alert concerning the recall of a Nivea deodorant product, BLACK & WHITE Invisible Roll-on, 50ml with batch number 93529610, after the European Union (EU) Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX) flagged the product as potentially harmful.
The deodorant, branded as providing “48H Protection in African Climate,” was recalled due to the presence of a harmful chemical, 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde (BMHCA).
This chemical, which is prohibited in cosmetic products, has been linked to significant health risks, including reproductive harm, potential effects on unborn children, and skin irritation and burns.
NAFDAC advised importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to immediately cease the importation, sale, or use of the affected product batch.
“We urge the public to exercise extreme caution and vigilance in handling this product,” a NAFDAC spokesperson stated, urging that stock of the affected batch be submitted to the nearest NAFDAC office.
Consumers experiencing any adverse effects from the product are encouraged to report incidents to NAFDAC via email at pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng, through e-reporting on the agency’s website, or by using the Med-safety app available on both Android and iOS platforms.
