Travellers were left stranded on Monday evening as failed portions of the Sagamu-Benin Expressway led to severe gridlock, causing frustration and forcing many to trek to their destinations.
The congested area, located just meters from the Sagamu old toll gate, has been a longstanding concern for commuters.
Eyewitnesses reported spending several hours stuck on the road, with many expressing their displeasure at the situation.
They called on the Federal Government to take responsibility for fixing the road, citing repeated delays and frequent traffic jams at the location.
The Stewardship News Correspondent, who was present at the scene, observed the traffic bottleneck, which was further complicated by ongoing repairs by the Ogun State Government.
The congestion was however worsened by impatient drivers, who struggled to navigate the remaining open lane.
Mr. Ugochukwu Eric, a media professional and one of the stranded commuters, expressed his disappointment, saying,
“It is unfortunate that the government has refused to fix this terrible place for a long time. This is an important road that connects the South-South and Eastern parts of the country to its economic hub.
The government should be more proactive, and any form of palliative is no longer acceptable. The government should please be responsible and reconstruct this road.”
He also appealed directly to the President, stating, “We are using this opportunity to call on President Bola Tinubu to direct the Minister of Works to ensure that motorists and commuters plying this road can heave a sigh of relief.”
It is worth noting that Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, visited the problematic section on Sunday and promised to take immediate action to reconstruct the road.
