The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Akure South Local Government Area has condemned the violent attack on its members during a ward meeting at Odopetu, Akure, allegedly carried out by thugs linked to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. during the PDP’s Odopetu Ward 7 meeting, where armed attackers disrupted the peaceful gathering, leaving many injured and forcing others to flee.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers, approximately thirteen in number, arrived shouting the APC governorship candidate’s slogan “Odatiwa, odirorun” before launching their assault.
The attackers were said to be armed with various weapons and specifically targeted unarmed PDP members in what the party has described as a deliberate attempt to intimidate its supporters ahead of the upcoming governorship elections.
The PDP has condemned the violence, expressing disappointment that a party claiming to be popular with the electorate would resort to such tactics.
The party further emphasized that such incidents pose a threat to the credibility of the electoral process, urging the Governor to rein in his supporters to avoid further escalation.
In response, the PDP called for calm among its members, assuring them that the incident had been reported to the police and that efforts were underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The party vowed not to be intimidated by these violent tactics and reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing legal action to protect its members.
“We will not be discouraged or deterred by these distractions,” stated S. A. Ogedengbe, Secretary of the PDP Caretaker Committee in Akure South.
He further alleged that the APC is using violence out of fear of the growing popularity of the PDP ahead of the November elections.
The PDP extended well-wishes for a speedy recovery to those injured in the attack and assured them of continued support in the ongoing political struggle.
